2017 Theme: Kyushu

For its 12th edition CAMERA JAPAN took a closer look at Kyushu, the third biggest island of Japan and most southwesterly of its four main islands. In terms of size and population, it is roughly comparable to the Netherlands, but that is where the similarities end.

Kyushu combines natural beauty with a rich and unique cultural heritage and is characterized by a stunning and diverse landscape, ranging from active volcanoes to bubbling hot springs.

Kyushu also happens to be the island where the Dutch held a trading post for over 250 years (as the only Western nation), first in Hirado and later on Deshima (now part of Nagasaki). This trading post was Japan’s window to the West, but also proved to be a starting point for the diffusion of Japanese culture in the world.
