TANAKA Noboru 田中 登 (1937-2006) studied French literature at Meiji University in Tokyo. He worked as a production assistant on Yojimbo before joining Nikkatsu where he worked under SUZUKI Seijun and IMAMURA Shohei. TANAKA directed many Roman porno films with a great deal of artistic freedom as long as the films contained at least four nude or sex scenes per hour. His films became known for their imaginative, sometimes surreal use of colour and poetic imagery within the setting of a harsh, brutal world.
