SONO Sion 園子温
Esshaa dōri no akai posuto

A successful director holds auditions for his latest film. Aspiring actors apply for roles in large numbers. Many don’t make it, but still decide to join the film as extras, all with their own motivation. Meanwhile the director also has to deal with absurd demands from his producer and his ex showing up on set. Exhilarating meta-comedy about filmmaking, which started as a workshop with the aspiring actors who play aspiring actors, from the inimitable SONO Sion.

SONO Sion 園子温 is one of the most prolific and beloved Japanese filmmakers working today. A poet, author and director with a large cult following, he almost never fails to surprise. What genre, style and tone will he work with next? Although he started making films in the late 1980s, he only gained international fame in the 2000s with the horror film Suicide Club and the cult epic Love Exposure. Thanks to his immense work ethic, it’s harder in some years not to see a SONO film than to see one. But why would you want to avoid them?
