Interventions
Toru Nora Company, KUSUDA Kenzo

At CAMERA JAPAN, coming a bit earlier or staying a little longer can bring you some pleasant joys. Like being surprised by one of our short interventions. These are short acts which will transport you briefly to another world. The past years have seen countless comical intermezzi, breathtaking martial arts demonstrations, and experimental dance performances.

The Toru Nora Company has been traveling the world and are now back in Amsterdam. They will present Kenshiro, a comical fight performance based on the Japanese manga Hokuto no ken in a performance that has played on the streets from Mexico to Canada.

We live in a time where vegetarianism is on the rise, where the vegan calmly can buy organic socks, and where everybody listens to the misfit. But can this quiet state of affairs continue if the bomb is suddenly dropped? According to the classical Japanese comic Kenshiro, surely not. Muscles, sweat and violence take over the world when the nuclear disaster destroys nature and leaves nothing but desert. Who wins the fight for survival? Muscles, muscles and more muscles!!!!!

Inspired by the comedy theme, KUSUDA Kenzo will make comical use of objects and the odd passerby in the lobby at LantarenVenster. KUSUDA Kenzo is a Netherlands-based Japanese choreographer/dancer.

Or in his own words…
“… An intuitive dancing spectacle about nothing really in particular, yet so distinctively peculiar. A sort of collectively shared co(s)mic experience co-emerging out of the blue and a few more colors on any given spot right in front of you.”

kobudo1

Kobudo is the art of wielding classical Japanese weapons. These are, just to name a few, the long stick (bo), the short stick (jo), the police baton (tonfa), the small trident (sai), or the sickle (kama). Training with weapons consists of practicing predetermined attack and defence patterns. Weapons training emphasizes timing, precision, understanding distance (short weapons vs. long weapons), and securing an advantageous position in combat.
