Twenty-year-old Haruka doesn’t know what to do with her life when she stumbles upon an exhibition of Bizen pottery. She becomes so fascinated with a beautifully crafted bowl that she spontaneously decides to quit her office job in Tokyo and to move to the pottery village. There she hopes to become an apprentice to the bowl maker, but the young artist isn’t really interested. Since the death of his parents, he has closed himself off from almost everyone. But Haruka does not intend to give up so easily. With a meticulous eye for detail, this is a loving ode to a craft that has been passed on from generation to generation for many centuries.
Twintiger Haruka heeft geen flauw idee wat ze met haar leven aan moet als ze in een winkelcentrum op een tentoonstelling van Bizen aardewerk stuit. Ze raakt zo gefascineerd door een prachtige grote schaal dat ze prompt besluit haar kantoorbaan in Tokio op te zeggen en te verhuizen naar het pottenbakkersdorp. Daar hoopt ze in de leer te kunnen gaan bij de maker van de schaal, maar de jonge kunstenaar blijkt helemaal niet op haar te zitten wachten: sinds de dood van zijn ouders heeft hij zich voor vrijwel iedereen afgesloten. Haruka is echter niet van plan op te geven. Liefdevolle ode aan een ambacht dat al eeuwenlang van generatie op generatie wordt doorgegeven, met een minutieus oog voor detail.

About the Director
SUETSUGU Naruhito (末次 成人) is a film director and creative director of advertisements, TV commercials and promotional videos. He is based in Singapore. SUETSUGU has directed and jointly produced short films with China, Korea and Taiwan including Timeless KOTOHIRA (2017). Haruka’s Pottery (2019) is SUETSUGU’s first full-length feature film.
