When her father abandons eleven-year-old Karin at the house of her grandfather, a monk in a small town in the Japanese countryside, her grandfather asks Anzu to look after the girl. Anzu is a giant ghost cat who can bridge the human world and the world of the forest spirits. A sardonic, irreverent fable as well as a lovely, gentle coming-of-age story reminiscent of My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away. Made with rotoscope animation and a variety of other techniques.
Als haar vader de elfjarige Karin bij haar opa, een monnik in een klein dorp op het Japanse platteland, dumpt, vraagt haar opa aan Anzu om op haar te letten. Anzu is een reusachtige spookkat die tussen de werelden van de mens en de bosgeesten beweegt. Zowel een sardonische, brutale fabel als een lief, zacht coming-of-ageverhaal dat doet denken aan My Neighbor Totoro en Spirited Away. Gemaakt met rotoscoop-animatie en een scala aan andere technieken.
KUNO Yoko 久野 遥子 is recognized internationally for her animation talent and work in rotoscoping. She has also been creating manga since secondary school. She worked as rotoscope animation director on IWAI Shunji’s The Case of Hana and Alice (2015). She has also been involved in the animation for the Crayon Shin-chan series. Ghost Cat Anzu is her feature length directorial debut.

YAMASHITA Nobuhiro 山下敦弘 is a graduate of Osaka University of Arts. His graduation film, Hazy Life, earned him his first award at the 2000 Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival. He has been recognized internationally with works screened at Busan International Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and Tokyo International Film Festival. His first popular success came with Linda Linda Linda in 2005. Since then he has built a substantial reputation for himself in Japanese cinema. YAMASHITA has been on a creative roll in the past year or two. CAMERA JAPAN 2024 will present not one but five (5!) of his films.
