At the dawn of the 21st century, J-Horror films like Ringu and Ju-on took the world by storm, but Japan’s history of onscreen horror stretches all the way back to the earliest days of cinema. Michael CRANDOL will discuss his new book Ghost in the Well: The Hidden History of Horror Films in Japan, which examines the forgotten roots of the Japanese horror film and the actress, SUZUKI Sumiko, who became Japan’s first horror movie star in the 1930s.
