The hard realities of the lives of three Vietnamese immigrant women, living and working in Japan, are shown in this stark, almost documentary-like second feature by FUJIMOTO Akio. The three women must navigate an economic system that seems rigged against them, especially when one of them falls ill. An empathetic, realistic and unflinching film about a very important contemporary topic.

FUJIMOTO Akio 藤元明緒 started out in family psychology before moving on to studying filmmaking at the Visual Arts Academy in Osaka. With familial ties to both Japan and Myanmar, FUJIMOTO explored his interests in family, nationality and identity in his first feature film Passage of Life. The film was awarded several prizes at international festivals as was his second feature Along the Sea, which explores Japan’s invisible communities.
