In dit comedy-avontuur-spektakel wordt Heer Tokugawa verrast door de inslag van een meteoriet. Hij stuurt zijn ninja er op af om de zaak te onderzoeken en komt er al snel achter dat er gevaar dreigt van een levensgevaarlijke vijand. Het gezelschap Yamata, Jinnai, de vrouwelijke ninja Rin, de zeer incompetente Nezumi wordt bijgestaan door de jonge Nishi, die heeft moeten vluchten nadat zijn dorp door het buitenaardse gevaar verwoest is. Een epische strijd, tussen dit gemêleerde gezelschap en de indringer, volgt, maar de aardse helden krijgen het zwaar tegen een vijand die zich gevaarlijk snel voortplant.
This film is not an animation but a live-action light-hearted comedy-adventure. When a large meteorite lands close to the village of Lord Tokugawa, he sends his ninja to investigate the disturbance. Soon they are beset with an attack from an inescapable and seemingly invincible enemy intent on reproducing as quickly as possible. Yamata, Jinnai, female ninja Rin and the incompetent Nezumi are joined by a terrified young boy, Nishi, after his village is decimated by the alien. Together, they set out to track and defeat the extraterrestrial monster but find that it is already multiplying rapidly. An epic engagement ensues.

Luitenant Kurokawa keert terug naar huis na de tweede Sino-Japanse oorlog in 1940. Hij is behangen met eremetaal, maar is zijn armen en benen in de strijd verloren. Na zijn terugkomst zijn de mensen van zijn woonplaats meer bezig met zijn vrouw dan met hem. Van haar wordt verwacht dat zij op een voorbeeldige wijze voor deze held van het vaderland zal zorgen. WAKAMATSU baseerde zijn film op het boek van EDOGAWA Rampo en is erin geslaagd een zeer indrukwekkende film te maken, mede dankzij de geweldige prestaties van SHINOBU Terajima, die voor haar rol de prijs voor Beste Actrice kreeg op de Berlinale van dit jaar.
Lieutenant Kurokawa returns home from the second Sino-Japanese War in 1940 as an honored and decorated soldier but without his arms and legs, which he lost in the battle in Mainland China. Soon after his return the Lieutenant’s wife, Shigeko becomes the public focus of attention. Everybody in the village expects her to set a shining example by fulfilling her duty to her country and taking care of the ‘god’ soldier. Based on a novel by EDOGAWA Rampo, WAKAMATSU creates an intense movie with an outstanding performance of SHINOBU Terajima that won her the award for Best Actress at this year’s Berlinale.

Eight men on a one-year science mission are stationed at the South Pole. Nishimura ends up replacing an injured colleague and while leaving his wife and daughter behind, becomes unexpectedly the new head chef of Dome Fuji station. He and the other members not only have to face their unknown and hostile environment but also the smaller and bigger problems that life has to offer: from existential crisis to the shocking discovery that all Ramen supplies are gone. An entertaining film that has charmed audiences inside and outside of Japan and won OKITA the Golden Shindo Kaneto Director Award 2009.

When rich-boy Shigeko arrives in the deserted village Kamiwada to take his internship at the hospital, it soon becomes clear that the local doctor, doctor Ino, is being treated like the village hero. Dit verhaal speelt zich af in Kioto, vijftien jaar nadat een middelbare scholier alle medewerkers van een bedrijf uit Fukuoka vermoord heeft en volgt op steeds psychedelischer wijze twee mannen, die door verschillende geldverstrekkers in dienst worden genomen. Set in Kyoto, 15 years after a high-school student murders all the staff of a personal-loans company in Fukuoka, the increasingly psychedelic story follows two men, Shinsuke and Terada, as they are employed by different money-lenders. Shinsuke’s task is to track Terada, who is suspected of the crime by an Internet vigilante group, but, first, he must find and enlist the help of Tsumotu, a homeless man, in order to repay his personal financial debt to his new employer, Mr. Abe. Is Terada innocent or he is responsible for a new series of copy-cat killings dubbed "The Divine Retribution Incidents"?

Oscar en zijn zus Linda zijn net aangekomen in Tokyo. Oscar is een onbetekenende drugshandelaar, Linda werkt als stripteasedanseres in een nachtclub. Oscar and his sister Linda are recent arrivals in Tokyo. Oscar's a small time drug dealer, and Linda works as a nightclub stripper. One night, Oscar is caught up in a police raid and gets shot. Als kind heeft Yu Honda zijn zieke moeder beloofd een vrouw zo mooi als Maria te zoeken en in dit vier uur durende meeslepende verhaal volgen we hem in zijn zoektocht en strijd voor deze perfecte vrouw. Na de dood van zijn moeder wordt de vader van Yu priester en lijken de twee een rustige toekomst tegemoet te gaan. Het lot bepaalt anders: een femme fatale valt voor de vader van Yu, terwijl een oprukkende sekte op afstand families manipuleert om ze vervolgens te bekeren. Vanuit verschillende perspectieven zien we hoe deze verhalen samenkomen en Yu de spil van dit alles wordt.
As a child, Yu Honda promises his mother that he will save himself for the perfect woman; but when his mother dies, his father turns to the church for consolation and Yu falls in with a band of delinquents. Aya Koike, a recruiter for a controversial cult, sees the family as a means to fulfil an ambitious plan. Whilst dressed in drag, Yu meets the girl of his dreams and saves her from a gang of thugs, but Yoko falls for his alter-ego. There appears little Yu can do to rescue the situation and he plays right into Aya’s hand. This highly acclaimed 4 hour epos won the “FIPRESCI” (International Federation of Film Critics) jury prize at Berlinale 2009.

“I work at a black company, I've had enough.” That's basically the key-line to this story in which Masao, a former NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training), starts off in a new job and finds out that the company he works for is a ‘black company’. This means he is being forced by his co-workers to work under unrelenting work conditions. For Masao and his colleagues, this kind of job is their last chance to make something of life. As she turns 16, Rin, a seemingly ordinary schoolgirl, is told that she is not human but part HILKO, a mutant species with extraordinary powers hunted close to extinction by the Japanese Defence Ministry. Dit is voor een moeder van middelbare leeftijd makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan. Komaki moet het gevecht aangaan met haar zeurende moeder, haar man die haar achtervolgt en haar gebrek aan scholing en doorzettingsvermogen. Ze moet het doen met één passie: lunchpakketten. Beleef het gevecht van Komaki en leer direct hoe je een perfect uitgebalanceerde lunch maakt van rijst en restjes, in de vorm van de vlag van Italië!
Komaki has a seemingly impossible task ahead. She has just separated from her husband, moved back to her parents’ house and she wants to rebuild a meaningful life. Vier twintigers delen een klein tweekamerappartement in Tokio. Allen worstelen met hun eigen problemen: Ryosuke is verliefd op de vriendin van één van zijn vrienden, Kotomi brengt haar dagen door in joggingpak voor de televisie, wachtend op een telefoontje van haar filmstervriendje, Naoki heeft twijfels over zijn relatie en Mirai eindigt elke avond dronken in een homobar. Hun dagelijkse routines worden doorbroken wanneer de jonge prostitué Satoru bij hen intrekt. Ze zijn geïntrigeerd door deze mysterieuze jongen en proberen te ontdekken wie hij werkelijk is. Het blijkt echter dat zij allemaal wel iets te verbergen hebben.
Four youngsters share a small two-bedroom-apartment in Tokyo. They all struggle with their own issues: Ryosuke is in love with his friend’s girlfriend, Kotomi spends her days in sweatpants in front of the television, waiting for her moviestar-boyfriend to call, Naoki is having doubts about his relationship and Mirai ends up drunk in a gay bar every night. This subtle and gentle film is set in the fishing village, where gossip in the local beauty parlour betrays the fact that most relationships there rarely last longer than the clientele’s perms. Sayo heeft haar moeder Kyoko al vier jaar niet meer gezien, maar na haar afstuderen besluit ze haar weer op te zoeken. Having been raised by her maternal grandmother, sensitive, young Sayo has not seen her mother, Kyoko, in over four years. After graduating from college in the city, she takes a short trip to her mother’s idyllic country retreat to find her caring for a nine-year old Thai boy. Never far below the surface, Sayo’s confusion over the decisions Kyoko has made comes to the fore. When faced with a choice, should you follow your heart or your head? Het jonge stel Meiko en Taneda proberen hun draai te vinden in de grote-mensen-wereld in Tokio. Wanneer Meiko op haar saaie kantoorbaan op dezelfde dag wordt uitgescholden en wordt uitgevraagd door haar baas, is ze het zat en neemt ze ontslag. Tanedo volgt snel. Hij besluit zich fulltime op zijn gitaarmuziek te richten. Sinds zijn studie vormt hij met twee vrienden een band, maar de laatste jaren hebben ze niet veel succes. Tanedo wil het tij keren en een album opnemen. Door een onverwachte, gebeurtenis verloopt de come-back van de band echter anders dan verwacht.
The young couple Meiko and Taneda are trying to find their way in the Grown-Up-World in Tokyo. When Meiko is being shouted at and asked out by her boss on the same day at her boring office-job, she’s had it and quits. Tanedo follows quickly. He decides to focus on his guitar music fulltime. Since college, he forms a band with two of his friends. For the last years though, without much success. Tanedo wants to turn the tide and record an album. Due to a unexpected event however, the come-back of the band turns out differently than expected.

Kayokyoku are songs the Japanese remember from the post-War period and listen to with a certain nostalgia for a long forgotten era. However outdated the music may be, the stories these songs tell us, are of all times and still as powerful as half a century ago. This is what the directors of Tokyo Rhapsody prove, with this sometimes slow, sometimes fast, compelling and hilarious stories, based on eleven kayokyoku¬-songs. 26 year old Yuichiro would rather be a film-maker than study medicine but, first, he has to clear a large debt. As he is drawn into the Japanese underworld, a lucrative opportunity to take part in a medical experiment arises, but what will be the ultimate consequences of his decision? Set in Tokai after a serious accident at a local nuclear re-cycling plant, USB questions our understanding of radiation; its fatal power, its healing capacity and its potential role in genetic mutation and evolution. Yuichiro must attempt to look to the future to come to terms with his immediate predicament.

Wanneer hij uitgezonden wordt naar een kantoor elders, besluit dat het tijd is om voor een nieuwe look te gaan en gaat een pruik dragen. Deze ogenschijnlijk eenvoudige oplossing voor zijn probleem maakt zijn leven immens gecompliceerd, en hij moet constant op zijn hoede zijn om ervoor te zorgen dat zijn collega's het geheim achter zijn weelderige haardos ontdekken. A lot of men start losing their hair as they grow older, and so does Moriyama who suffers from paranoia because of it. When he is transferred to another office, he decides it is time for a new look and starts wearing a wig. This initially easy solution complicates his life immensely, since he has to be on his toes constantly to prevent his colleagues discovering that his voluminous hairdo is not all his natural own. A hilarious comedy about a man with an inferiority complex.

Yuriko’s Aroma is een late coming-of-age film van een vrouw in de dertig. Yuriko is een massage-aroma-therapeute die volgens haar baas en collega nu toch wel toe is aan een vriendje. Ze heeft een talent voor het vinden van de juiste aroma’s voor klanten en daardoor achtervolgt ze haar neus voor een aroma dat haar zintuigen geheel op hol doet slaan. Yuriko’s Aroma laat heel sterk een pijnlijk onderwerp in Japan zien, eenzaamheid, en hoe deze eenzaamheid en onzekerheid van een jonge volwassen vrouw haar ertoe brengt een onconventionele affaire aan te gaan. Dit zorgt voor de nodige spanning en sensatie, totdat het uit de hand dreigt te lopen.
Yuriko’s Aroma is a belated coming-of-age film of a woman in her early thirties. Yuriko is a massage aroma therapist who, according to her boss, really needs to get a boyfriend. She has a talent for finding the right aroma’s for her customers and follows her nose when she smells something that make her senses spin. Yuriko’s Aroma depicts a painful subject in Japan, loneliness, and how this loneliness and insecurity of a young adult female make her commit to an unconventional affair. This causes a sensational and exciting time for Yuriko, until it seems to go wrong for all the wrong reasons.
